Dr. Curtis Rogers discusses art, writing, history, and libraries with award-winning illustrator Sophie Blackall and award-winning author Rita Williams-Garcia at the 2017 StoryfestSC held in Columbia on Saturday, June 3. Blackall’s editorial illustrations have appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, Architectural Digest, Town and Country, Vogue, and Gourmet. She has illustrated over thirty books for children including Ruby's Wish, Meet Wild Boars, Pecan Pie Baby, Big Red Lollipop, and the Ivy and Bean series and won the 2016 Randolph Caldecott Medal for Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear. Rita Williams-Garcia is an American writer of young-adult novels. She is the New York Times bestselling author of nine novels for young adults and middle grade readers. She has won the 2011 Newbery Honor Award, Coretta Scott King Award, and Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction for her book, One Crazy Summer. She also won the PEN/Norma Klein Award.

In this episode of LibraryVoicesSC, Dr. Curtis Rogers discusses South Carolina in the Civil War and Reconstruction Eras: Essays from the Proceedings of the South Carolina Association with Dr. Fritz Hamer. South Carolina in the Civil War and Reconstruction Eras is an anthology of the most enduring and important scholarly articles about the Civil War and Reconstruction era published in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the South Carolina Historical Association. Past officers of the South Carolina Historical Association (SCHA), Michael Brem Bonner and Fritz Hamer have selected 23 essays from the several hundred published since 1931 to create this treasure trove of scholarship on an impressive variety of subjects including race, politics, military events, and social issues.
