BibliObservatorio - Episodio 1 (Español)

En este primer episodio de BibliObservatorio, Caroline Smith, consultora en servicios de inclusión y diversidad,  entrevista a Ivette Villarreal, quien indaga sobre la conexión entre los cuentos favoritos leídos o contados en la infancia y cómo éstos definen la vida de la gente.

Sus primeras memorias la llevan a los cuentos de Tío Tigre y Tío Conejo contados y recreados por su padre. Estas narraciones de la tradición oral de Venezuela entretuvieron su niñez y jugarían un rol importante para ella al encontrarse con el legado de Rafael Rivero Oramas, narrador y cineasta venezolano, quien a lo largo de su vida se dedicó a fomentar la lectoescritura en la infancia por vía editorial y radial.

Animada por  remembranzas alegres, crea BibliObservatorio, plataforma multimedia para promover la lectoescritura en la infancia y adolescencia, además de propiciar la escucha activa y  conversaciones conscientes; en BibliObservatorio, convergen la magnificencia del universo vista a través de la infancia y un poema de Rubén Darío, en donde el libro es un telescopio, para  explorar cuentos que crean conciencia sobre la unicidad del ser.

BibliObservatory - Episode 1 (English)

In this first episode of BibliObservatory, Caroline Smith, Inclusive Services Consultant, interviews co-host of this series, Ivette Villarreal, who searches the connection between people’s favorite books or stories heard in childhood and how those stories define their lives.

Her earliest memories take her to the stories of Uncle Tiger & Uncle Rabbit retold by her father. These traditional tales from her homeland Venezuela amused her as an infant and also played an important role later when she came across the legacy of Rafael Rivero Oramas, a Venezuelan storyteller and filmmaker, who dedicated his life to children’s literacy efforts in his country.

Encouraged by those joyful remembrances, she created BibliObservatory, a multimedia platform to promote children’s and teens literacy through storytelling by engaging them in active listening and mindful conversations; In BibliObservatory the magnificence of the universe seen from a child’s eye converge with a poem by Rubén Darío (Nicaragua) in which the book is a telescope to explore oral stories that creates awareness of each individual´s uniqueness.

Dr. William B. Gravely - Episode 79

Dr. Curtis Rogers discusses the new University of South Carolina Press book They Stole Him Out of Jail: Willie Earle, South Carolina’s Last Lynching Victim, by Dr. William B. Gravely. Dr. Gravely is Professor Emeritus of Religion at the University of Denver and is a graduate of Wofford College, Drew University, and Duke University where he received his PhD in 1969. He recorded the recollections of journalists, law enforcement officers, attorneys, clergy, and relatives of Willie Earle, who was lynched on February 17, 1947. The recordings and other primary documents are available online at the William Gravely Oral History Collection at the University of South Carolina Libraries Digital Collections website.

Archive: South Carolina Poetry since 2005 - Episode 78

Dr. Curtis Rogers discusses Archive: South Carolina Poetry since 2005 and more with Dr. Ed Madden, Dr. Ray McManus, and Dr. Jeffrey Makala. Author of four books of poetry, Dr. Madden is a professor of English and director of the Women's and Gender Studies program at the University of South Carolina. In 2015 he was named the poet laureate for the City of Columbia. Dr. McManus is an award-winning poet and Professor of English at the University of South Carolina Sumter. He is Writer in Residence at the Columbia Museum of Art and Chair of the Board of Governors for the South Carolina Academy of Authors. Dr. Makala is Special Collections Librarian and University Archivist at Furman University and is coeditor of Archive: SC Poetry Since 2005, published by the Ninety-Six Press, which is part of the South Carolina Poetry Archives in Furman University's Special Collections and Archives department.

Dr. Bobby Donaldson - Episode 77

Dr. Curtis Rogers discusses the Columbia SC 63 initiative and State Library's exhibit with Dr. Bobby Donaldson. Professor Donaldson is an associate professor of history at the University of South Carolina and leads the Center for Civil Rights History and Research, housed in the Hollings Special Collections Library. He also serves as the lead scholar for Columbia SC 63: Our Story Matters, a documentary history initiative that chronicles the struggle for civil rights and social justice in Columbia.
