Dr. Curtis Rogers discusses educating African-American students and more with Dr. Gloria Swindler Boutte and Dr. Erin Miller. Dr. Boutte is a Professor at the USC College of Education’s Instruction and Teacher Education Department. She is the author of three books, has received more than $1.7M in grants, has more than 87 publications, and has presented her work internationally in China, Africa, Australia, South America, and Canada. She has served as a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Scholar at several universities in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Erin Miller is an Assistant Professor of Language and Diversity in the Reading and Elementary Education Department at UNC Charlotte. She teaches undergraduate courses in elementary language arts methods and diversity in urban education. She is currently serving as chair of the Early Childhood Education Assembly of the National Council of Teachers of English and investigating signs and symbols of whiteness with elementary aged children.

Dr. Curtis Rogers discusses children's literature and more with award-winning author, Carmen Agra Deedy. Carmen has been writing for children for over two decades. Born in Havana, Cuba, she came to the U.S. as a refugee in 1964. She grew up in Decatur, Georgia, where she lives today. She began writing as a young mother and storyteller whose NPR commentaries on All Things Considered were collected and released under the title, Growing Up Cuban In Decatur, Georgia. The collection of twelve stories soon garnered awards, among them a 1995 Publishers Weekly Best Audio (for Adult Storytelling) and a 1996 Parents’ Choice Gold Award. She has also been an invited speaker at venues as varied as The American Library Association, Refugees International, The International Reading Association, Columbia University, The Smithsonian Institute, TED, The National Book Festival, the Kennedy Center, and StoryfestSC to kick off summer reading in South Carolina.

Dr. Curtis Rogers discusses the 2018 hurricane season with Andrew Phillips, Hurricane Program Manager for the South Carolina Emergency Management Division. Prior to moving to Columbia to work as a Hazard Mitigation Specialist at SCEMD in 2015, he was a TV Meteorologist for WBTW News 13 in Myrtle Beach from for 3.5 years. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography and Atmospheric Science from the University of Georgia.

Dr. Curtis Rogers discusses All for Civil Rights: African American Lawyers in South Carolina, 1868–1968 with author W. Lewis Burke. Before joining the USC School of Law faculty, Distinguished Professor Emeritus Burke was a VISTA Volunteer and a legal services attorney. As a clinician, Professor Burke continues represent low income clients. In 2003 he was awarded the “Outstanding Faculty Service Award” for his years of community service including Habitat for Humanity, Appleseed, and his pro bono representation of a death row client. He was an editor of Madam Chief Justice: South Carolina’s Jean Hoefer Toal published by U.S.C. Press in 2015 and is author of All for Civil Rights: African American Lawyers in South Carolina, 1868–1968 which is part of the Southern Legal Studies Series by University of Georgia Press.
